Formula 1 driver Liam Lawson revealed he came dangerously close to a potentially deadly incident during Sunday's Mexico City Grand Prix when two safety personnel darted across the track immediately ahead of his car

The concerning event happened on the third lap when marshals were observed on the racing surface as Lawson was rejoining the race following an quick visit to the pits to change his compromised front wing

Racer's Instant Response

Moments later, the team's competitor Lawson radioed to his race engineer saying: "Is this for real? Did you witness that? I could have... killed them"

"I truly couldn't comprehend what I was witnessing"

"I came out on a new set of hards, and then I got to Turn One and there were just two individuals running across the track"

"I came close to striking one of them, truthfully, it was incredibly risky"

Safety Concerns Raised

"Obviously there's been a communication breakdown somewhere but I've never encountered that before, and I can't recall observing that in the past. It's completely unacceptable"

"We can't understand how on a live track track officials can be permitted to just dash across the track like that. I'm clueless about the cause, I'm sure we'll get some form of reasoning, but it really can't happen again"

Official Investigation Underway

Formula 1's governing body, the International Automobile Federation (FIA), is currently investigating the circumstances

"Subsequent to a first corner event, the race directors was informed that wreckage remained on the track at the critical section of that bend" commented the regulatory authority

"On lap three, track officials were informed and placed on standby to go onto the racing surface and recover the debris once all cars had passed"

"Immediately when it was understood that Lawson had pitted, the orders to send marshals were rescinded and a caution signal was displayed in that area"

"We are still investigating what happened subsequent to that time"
