Courageous Train Employee Endures Severe Injuries During Mass Knife Incident on High-Speed Train
A brave train employee who intervened to save travelers during a multiple stabbing attack on a express train has sustained life-threatening wounds, police confirmed on Sunday.
Details of the Frightening Incident
CCTV video reportedly shows the staff member trying to halt the assailant as the train traveled between a city and Huntingdon in Cambridgeshire. Witnesses described a frightening 14-minute duration after the train left Peterborough, with bloodied victims running through compartments.
The suspect, a 32-year-old citizen from Peterborough, is in detention for questioning. Police announced a major event on the 6:25 pm service from Peterborough to King's Cross in downtown London.
Emergency Response and Aftermath
The incident on the weekend resulted in 11 people being treated in hospital after the train made an unscheduled stop at the station in Huntingdon. Several individuals have since been released from medical care.
A witness filmed the suspect waving a large knife and being subdued with a stun device as he faced police on the station. He was reportedly heard shouting, "Kill me, end my life."
“This awful event has created broad consequences. We are thinking of the victims and their families – particularly the courageous member of train personnel whose relatives are being assisted by specialist officers,” said a senior police official.
Union Reaction and Calls for Measures
Train unions were swift to praise employees and call for more measures. A union leader said he would be “seeking immediate discussions with government, rail employers and police to ensure that we have the best available support, tools and robust procedures in operation”.
A different association representative urged the rail company and government “to move quickly to review security, to support the affected workers, and to ensure nothing like this occurs again”.
Driver Praised for Quick Thinking
The operator who stopped the service at Huntingdon was reported as being “very shaken” but “well”, and has been commended by association officials for doing “precisely what was needed”.
“He didn’t halt the service in the middle of two stops where it’s clearly difficult for the first responders to access, but he carried on traveling until he arrived to Huntingdon, where the response was pretty much waiting,” explained a association representative.
Additional Information
Authorities said they got the initial distress calls at 7:39 pm, and the service was compelled to make an unplanned stop in Huntingdon at 7:50 pm.
An observer recounted initially thinking if the situation was a holiday prank, but soon realized from people's expressions that it was real.
Authorities have stated there is no evidence to indicate the event was a terror-related incident and have requested the community to provide with any additional details.
Rail operations on the affected route are anticipated to experience delays until the following day, with travelers advised to postpone their travel where possible.
